Top Things to do in Kuching

Kuching is the capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, which is located on the island of Borneo. Sarawak is the least visited part of Malaysia, although there are heaps of things to do all throughout the state as well as in the capital.

Known as the Cat City, Kuching has loads of things to keep you busy for a long time. It is also within easy reach of some of the area’s other great attractions, with fascinating tribal culture and spectacular rainforests being just a couple of reasons to spend time in this excellent place.

Check out the Cat Heritage

All around the city you will spot cute statues and sculptures of cats. Whilst there are three main ones there are also a number of smaller ones too. There is also the fantastic Cat Museum where you can feast your eyes on loads of kitties as well as learning more about the city itself and its name. The cat-mosphere certainly adds a quirky little touch to Kuching!

Stroll around Chinatown

Kuching’s vibrant Chinatown has a long and interesting history and there are lots of fine examples of traditional architecture all along the streets. The older part of Chinatown is also home to several shrines and temples. Some favourites include the old and colourful Hong San Si Temple with its intricate dragons on top of the roof, and the Hiang Thian Siang Temple. There are lots of street vendors as well as a terrific hawker centre where you can grab a tasty bite to eat.

Shop ‘Till You Drop

Kuching boasts some fairly new and modern shopping centres and malls that are brimming with a vast array of items. Whether you are looking to give your credit cards a work out or are trying to find things to do when the weather isn’t being quite as friendly, the city’s shopping scene is sure to pleasantly surprise you.

Relax by the Waterfront

Kuching’s waterfront is edged with a nice walkway where you will find a variety of musicians and street entertainers as well as a few places to eat and drink. The views across the river are pretty, and it is a delightful spot to simply sit on a bench and chill out whilst soaking up the atmosphere. Many people like to visit at sunset. You could also take a boat trip along the river for a different view of the city. Lazily drift along and watch the many sights unfold before your eyes.

Daytrip to Bako National Park

Within easy reach of the city, Bako National Park is a really popular excursion. It is a fairly small national park so is completely possible to visit independently. It is also one of the oldest national parks in the state. You can enjoy a rainforest adventure, complete with lots of different native wildlife. Look out for the unusual proboscis monkeys with their large noses!
