South Africa’s Durban is the third biggest city in the country. Sitting near to the coast, the city boasts many fine sandy beaches along a stretch known locally as the Golden Mile. There are many other things to do in Durban as well, with a rich culture and plenty of attractions. Durban is well connected to the rest of the country, and there are heaps of places to eat, drink, sleep, and shop in and around the city.
Some of the best things to do in Durban include:
A short way out of the city proper, Crocodile Creek is situated in the town of Tongaat. Tongaat is famous for its sugar heritage. Crocodile Creek sits on the river, surrounded by bush land, and it is home to a large number of fearsome creatures. There are thousands of crocodiles, alligators, caiman, snakes, lizards … and more! It is certainly not a place for the skittish or faint of heart! Within the area you will find a good choice of places to get a bite to eat and a refreshing drink, and a selection of shops sell an assortment of souvenirs, accessories, and trinkets. There are some nice walking trails where you can enjoy the great outdoors, canopy walks through the tree tops, and a pretty waterfall.
Durban offers lots of opportunities for visitors to enjoy different water sports and activities. The waves make for some great surfing, and you can also swim in the sea or paddle a canoe. If you don’t fancy getting sand in your clothes, there is a large surfing pool with artificial waves in the enormous Gateway shopping centre.
Snorkelling and diving allow you to see more of the interesting marine life that lives in the waters, and wreck dives are also possible. The waters are home to fearsome sharks, and you can take a trip out to see the life-saving nets that prevent the sharks from coming too close to the shore and attacking bathers. Boat trips are also available where you can go out into the sea to try and spot a range of large fish and other sea creatures. Go yacht and catamaran sailing, paddle boarding, and fishing.
The gorgeous golden sandy beaches are a major attraction for visitors to Durban. The beaches are really wide, providing plenty of space for bathers. Take a dip in the sparkling Indian Ocean, relax on the sands, and soak up some South African sun. There are play areas and pools for kids close to the beaches.
There are several exciting casinos in Durban that offer high-rolling (and potentially expensive!) fun. Be careful though not to blow your entire travel budget!
