Couple your passion for travel with a love of the game, and you’ll soon find that your two favourite hobbies can take you to some of the world’s most spectacular locations. So pack the clubs and grab your camera, because we’re going on a global journey to the world’s finest places to tee off.
City: Liberty National Golf Club, New Jersey
Designed by serial collaborators Tom Kite and Bob Cupp, the Liberty National Golf Club rests on the harbour of the city that never sleeps, claiming views of what is undoubtedly the world’s most recognisable skyline. With iconic NYC landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbour and Verrazano Narrows Bridge all visible from the course, the significance of the setting can be felt as you tee off towards the water, subtly sparkling in the sunshine.
The course upholds tour level standards of play and has successfully lured in a number of big names over the years to make par alongside the dramatic Manhattan Skyline.
Coastal: Playa Grande, Dominican Republic
Picture the sun melting towards the lull of the sea, the light breeze rustling the still of the palm trees and the sound of waves crashing upon the cragginess of the coastline. This is the backdrop to your Caribbean golfing experience. Playa Grande on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic was designed by the legendary Robert Trent Jones Senior, and the result is a breath-taking collection of 18 holes, each with ocean vistas more spectacular than the last.
Sloping hills and lush green flora surround you as you tee off and journey along the winding coast, before ultimately you’ll find yourself at the chic clubhouse for a taste of the Caribbean. The course neighbours the exquisite Amanera Residences and Villas and is open to both residents and non-residents.
Desert: Desert Highlands, Arizona
From land and sea to the fearsome heat of the Arizonian desert. Whilst many flock to this world-class golfing haven to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson, for others, playing here is a chance to enjoy the game in one of the most awe-inspiring settings this world has to offer.
The majesty of Pinnacle Peak dominates the course, embellished by cacti and indigenous trees, whilst rolling hills transform the remaining horizon into a dynamic, somewhat distracting display. Turf has been laid at intermittent points on the course to create a ‘target golf’ concept and ensure that the playability is on par with the scenery. This 72-par golf course is one to add to the bucket list.
Lakeside: Big sky Golf Club & Country Club, Pemberton, British Columbia, Canada
Located at the foot of 8,000ft Mount Currie, this award winning golf course is up there with the world’s greatest purely on location alone. Add the exceptional quality of the course and its bent grass fairways, Ravensdale Sand Bunkers and a play range of 5,200 to 7,001 yards, and you’ve got the makings of an exceptional golfing experience.
Now add in location. It’s ungroomed, rustic and nothing short of breath-taking, with rolling hills (some clad with snow) in all directions. Tranquil and visually stunning, Big Sky is the retreat for golfers with a love of nature.
